For many years an environmental battleground, this place has now obtained protection as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This is an excellent site especially for wintering warblers and buntings, as well as having a high density of dragonfly species.


Key Species

Russet Bush Warbler, Brown Bush Warbler, Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, Large Grass Warbler (winter), Bright-capped Cisticola, Crested Bunting, Common Rosefinch,


Other Species

Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Goshawk, Chinese Francolin, Savanna Nightjar, Collared Scops Owl, Barred Owlet, Chestnut Bunting.


Other Wildlife

Hong Kong Newt is found in the stream here.



The valley around Sha Lo Tung village can bevery productive as well as the walk north towards Hok Tau reservoir.

Upland disused paddy, fung shui woods.



Getting there

Take a bus from Tai Po along the Ting Kok road and walk up the hill to Sha Lo Tung (which is a good 45 minute walk) or a taxi from directly to Sha Lo Tung and then walk through to Hok Tau reservoir and back down along the Hok Tau road. There is a minibus 52K that goes to Fanling from there.
